The Importance of School Readiness at Aspire Wollert

Starting school is a significant milestone in a child’s life, and ensuring they are ready for this new chapter is a key focus of Aspire’s educational programs. School readiness is about more than just academic skills; it encompasses social, emotional, and physical preparedness that lays the groundwork for a smooth transition to primary school. Aspire Early Education and Kindergarten Wollert takes pride in its comprehensive school readiness initiatives that equip children with the tools they need to thrive in their educational journey.
A literature review "Transition: A Positive Start to School", conducted by the Centre for Equity & Innovation in Early Childhood at the University of Melbourne, found that school readiness programs are beneficial to kinder-aged children. Preparing children for school is crucial because it sets the tone for their learning experiences and fosters a positive attitude toward education. Aspire’s Step into Prep Four-Year-Old Kinder Program helps children get ready for school in a number of ways.

Aspire Wollert has a range of engaging and practical activities in their Step into Prep Program to ensure our children are ready to enter school with enthusiasm and confidence. Below are some highlights of their initiatives:
In Room 8, the kinder children have been completing a workbook that focuses on fine motor skills. These activities are crucial in developing their ability to write letters, numbers, and eventually their names. By enhancing their fine motor skills, children gain the precision and control needed for writing, a fundamental aspect of their primary school journey.
The children have participated in two visits to Harvest Home Primary School. During these excursions, they walked to the school, played on the playground, listened to a story in the library, and engaged in “schoolwork” inspired by the story. These experiences allowed the children to practice listening to instructions from a new teacher, walking safely as a group, and adapting to a school environment. Their exemplary behaviour and engagement during these visits showcased their readiness for the next step in their education.
In Room 8, children have had the opportunity to dress up in school uniforms and use school bags. This imaginative play not only gets them excited about starting school but also helps them practice self-help skills like dressing themselves and packing their belongings.
The lunch box program is another valuable initiative aimed at fostering independence in the Step into Prep Program. Over three weeks, children practised opening and handling various types of packaging, such as cheese, yogurt, and popcorn, and eating whole pieces of fruit. Aspire provided lunch box items for the first two weeks, with families contributing in the third week. This program helps children become comfortable with managing their lunch boxes, a key aspect of daily school life.

Through these thoughtfully designed activities, children at Aspire Wollert are developing skills that extend beyond the classroom. They are learning to:
School readiness is a collaborative effort between educators, families, and the children themselves. Aspire Early Education and Kindergarten Wollert is committed to providing children with enriching experiences that prepare them for the exciting journey ahead.
