Storytelling Fun at Aspire Cobblebank

Engaging in reading and storytelling activities is a major part of our curriculum at Aspire. Storytelling plays a vital role by promoting creativity, enhancing language development, and building emotional intelligence in young children. The team at Aspire Early Education Cobblebank set up storytelling experiences for the children throughout the term, to spark their interest in reading and love for learning.

Discover some of the magical stories the children at Cobblebank have engaged in this year already!

Reading and Storytelling Fun at Cobblebank

Explorers Room - 1-2 years of age

In Cobblebank’s Explorer’s room, the nursery children had an Old MacDonald's farm theatre and storytelling day. Cobblebank’s nursery educator took to the stage and used a farmer puppet to explain the story to the children. It was such a fun and entertaining way to start teaching our little explorers to begin a love for reading and storytelling. This experience encourages them to communicate and take part in the dramatic storytelling experience as well.

Leaders Room – 4-year-old Kinder

In the 4-year-old Kinder room, the Kindergarten team work very hard to ensure the children receive all the important lessons as they prepare for primary school.

This week Stranger Danger was the highlighted topic for the kinder class. To explain this topic, the kinder team delivered the classical fairy tale "The Little Red Riding Hood.” This story is about a girl who visits her grandmother but is tricked by a wolf. The wolf disguises himself as the grandmother, but a huntsman saves Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother just in time. The story teaches the dangers of talking to strangers, and how to avoid such situations. Storytelling was great way for the children to understand this topic, in a way that they could understand.

Creators Room – 3-year-old Kinder

Language and literacy development also plays a very important part in our 3-year-old kindergarten program. Recently, the kinder children have been interested in the Very Hungry Caterpillar story, which is about a small caterpillar that eats so much it becomes full and spins itself into a cocoon, turning into a beautiful butterfly.

Cobblebank’s Kindergarten team planned a special puppet show to tell the wonderful story. The children participated in the puppet show too, taking part in the storytelling. They also created wonderful artwork of the caterpillar afterwards which they showcased in a beautiful storytelling corner.

As an extension of the children's learning, the children were fortunate to have a visit last week from the team at Butterfly Adventures. Here the children were able to watch a caterpillar turn into a real life butterfly. What a fantastic active learning experience for the children and we thank Butterfly Adventures for making this happen.

Adventures Room - 2- 3 years old

The toddler children in Adventures room recently enjoyed the classical story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears which was presented by our educators through a puppet show. This is a classical fairy tale about a girl named Goldilocks who enters the home of three bears while they’re away. She tries their porridge, chairs, and beds, finding one of each that’s "just right." When the bears return, they find Goldilocks asleep in the bed, and she wakes up and runs away.

This was a great way to learn about sizes, opposite characters, curiosity and consequences of someone’s actions. It also supported the children in enhancing their language skills and promoting their creative thinking and imagination through play.

The Benefits of Storytelling in Early Education

There are many benefits to storytelling in early childhood settings, which we discussed in our Aspire resource last month. Storytelling plays a vital role in promoting creativity and imagination, as well as improving concentration and memory.

Storytelling is the perfect opportunity for children to learn new words, phrases, and sentence structures. Through stories, children are also introduced to different perspectives, new cultures, and important life lessons.

It also offers children the opportunity to empathise with fictional characters and share another person’s perspective. This helps children’s experience different emotions, boost their resilience, and navigate their own feelings from a young age.

The benefits of storytelling are endless, which is why it is a big part of Aspire Cobblebank’s curriculum. If you’d like to learn more about the program at Aspire Cobblebank, click on the links below!
