Vesak at Aspire Berwick Waters: A Celebration of Light, Culture and Community

Posted May 27th 2025

Each year, the Vesak festival is one of the most anticipated events at Aspire Berwick Waters, and for good reason. It’s more than just a cultural day on the calendar. Many of our educators, families, and children share a Sri Lankan heritage and Vesak is a time of joy, generosity, and deep spiritual meaning.

Celebrated on the full moon in May, Vesak (වෙසක් පෝය) honours three key events in the life of Lord Buddha: his birth, enlightenment, and passing into final nirvana (Parinibbana). For millions of Buddhists around the world, it’s a day to reflect, share kindness and come together in harmony. And that’s exactly what we did here at Aspire Berwick Waters.

Latern Making, A Symbol of Enlightment

The centre came alive with colour, creativity, and light. One of the most beautiful traditions of Vesak is the making of lanterns, a symbol of enlightenment, and this year our children and educators embraced the tradition in full!

In Room Gurrborra, we welcomed a family who celebrates Vesak and who kindly shared their stories and customs with us. Together, we created beautiful traditional lanterns, with children enthusiastically offering coloured paper and helping decorate them with care. We even extended the experience by making recycled water bottle lanterns, combining creativity with sustainability and environmental awareness.

Our amazing educators also prepared a Thorna - a traditional display of lights - with great pride. This glowing centrepiece lit up our learning spaces and reminded us all of the joy that comes from shared traditions.

Sharing Joy Through Food and Generosity

No celebration is complete without food and this year, our Vesak celebration was full of flavour and heart. With the support of our chef and team, we gave away over 200 home-cooked Sri Lankan meals to Aspire families and community members.

This generous act of giving, inspired by the tradition of Dana (almsgiving), brought people together in the most meaningful way. The meals were prepared with love and gratitude, filling hearts and bellies alike.

We Love Our Community

Vesak at Aspire Berwick Waters is more than just a cultural event - it’s a celebration of who we are as a community. A place where culture is embraced, families are celebrated, and children are invited to explore the beauty of traditions both old and new.

This celebration reminded us how connected we are, not just through shared spaces, but through shared values: generosity, learning, respect, and care for one another.

A Big Thank You

To everyone who contributed, participated, or simply shared a smile on the day: thank you. Your involvement is what made Vesak so memorable, and it’s why we’re proud to call Aspire Berwick Waters a true community hub.

We are incredibly thankful to Hiru and Klarice for cooking such delicious dishes, to Sumeet for his artistic touch, and to Kalpani and her husband for gifting us the stunning handmade lanterns. Your contributions made the day extra special.
