Structured Learning, Thornhill Park’s Incursion Program

Aspire Thornhill Park’s incursion program is intentionally structured to give children a sense of order throughout their week. The centre is lucky enough to have a team of dedicated educators and teachers who are willing to share their passions with the children. Read on to meet the team and see how they bring their skills and interests to the children through incursions.
Team member Ranjit is sharing her passion for the environment as she teaches the children about sustainability. These sessions include lessons about recycling, where rubbish goes, plants and nature, and all sorts of exciting sustainability topics. Have a look at some of the sustainability practices the centre has implemented below!
Children get the opportunity to unleash their creative side with Gurbhakshish on a Tuesday. Exploring a variety of art mediums such as papier mâché, painting and plasticine, the children get to create their own works of art. Being creative engages children's sense of touch, sight, and sound, and helps develop their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Auslan is an important language to learn to help promote inclusivity. Research shows us that children learn languages more effortlessly than adults, which is why many of Aspire’s centres implements the learning of languages other than English. One of Aspire Thornhill Park’s educators, Lovepreet, knows Auslan and teaches it to the Kinder students. Learning Auslan promotes cognitive development by engaging different areas of the brain associated with language acquisition and spatial reasoning.
Running on a rotating, fortnightly roster, the centre focuses on getting active on a Thursday! Week one sees Aspire faves Little Sports Heroes bring the action as they teach children about basic physical movements and skills. Children enjoy activities such as soccer, throwing skills, minigolf and other fun sports. The other Thursday, Paramjit instructs yoga. By teaching simple breathing techniques, stretches and yoga positions, the children regulate their emotions and their bodies.
Then, at the end of the week, centre chef Anthony runs cooking classes with the children. He is passionate about cooking, and teaching the children the importance of healthy eating. Recently, the children learned how to make traditional Sri Lankan jaggery cake from a centre parent. The children got to mix, measure and pour the ingredients, as well as learn about the different ingredients used.
