National Science Week, held between 12th-16th August, is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology and thousands of individuals – from students to scientists to chefs and musicians! The theme for this year is "Species Survival - More than just sustainability", which aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world.
At Aspire, we recognise National Science Week as part of our curriculum as a fantastic opportunity to engage young children in exploring the wonders of science through fun, hands-on activities. At Aspire Early Education White Hills, our educators organised a range of different science activities for the children to engage in exploring various science concepts.

Our White Hills educators set up a science lab for the children where they got to experiment with different things, including magnetic kits. The science lab area supports children to develop a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, inquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating.
The children also had fun making colourful lava lamps during science week. Using oil, water and food colouring the children were amazed by this experiment, whilst also learning about basic chemical reactions. When children interact with science investigation, they use play to investigate, imagine and explore new ideas and use reflective thinking to consider why things happen!
Using a sensory tray the children created a volcano with different resources and used red paint has the explosion. Through science investigations like creating this volcano, children can be curious and enthusiastic participants in their own learning whilst experimenting with cause and effect.
The children also engaged in a fun colour changing follower experiment. This experiment helped our Kinder children learn how flowers absorb water through their stem and up to the flower head and leaves. This experience encourages children to use reflective thinking to consider why the plants changed colour.
Other than providing fun and excitement for the children, engaging in science activities also offers numerous benefits for their development including:
Engaging in science activities during early childhood fosters a range of cognitive, social, and emotional skills that are essential for lifelong learning and development.
