Recognising Earth Day at Aspire Cobblebank

On April 22nd we recognise Earth Day, which aims to show support for environmental protection and raise awareness of the issues which threaten our planet, including pollution, deforestation and the illegal wildlife trade. The Earth Day theme for 2024 was ‘Planet vs Plastics’, which promotes a commitment to stop plastics for the health of both humans and the planet. It calls for a 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040, with the goal of building a plastic-free world for future generations.

That’s why it is up to us to make a positive change for this amazing planet we call Earth and do our part to help create a better future.

At Aspire Cobblebank, they recognise the importance of teaching children about Earth Day and simple ways we can protect and look after our environment. Learn more about some of the activities and learning experiences the Cobblebank children participated in on Earth Day.

Earth Day at Aspire Cobblebank

Children at Aspire Cobblebank have recently been learning about our planet and how we can protect it.

In the Explorers room, the Toddler children are always recycling and repurposing plastic to make items or a piece of art whilst enhancing creativity and imagination. To raise awareness of Earth’s habitats and how plastic may affect them, an imaginative play with animals on land and sea took place. The Kinder rooms also created Earth Day paintings and drawings using different craft materials, while learning about the importance of this day. See some photos below of the activities the children engaged in!

At Aspire Cobblebank, we know that recognising Earth Day is not only important to raise awareness, but is also a fun and engaging way to teach young children about the importance of taking care of our planet. This will teach them good habits about being environmentally conscious as they grow into adults.

Importance of Recognising Earth Day in Early Education

There are many benefits of recognising Earth Day in Early Education for young children such as:

  • Environmental Awareness: Introducing children to Earth Day fosters an early understanding of environmental issues and the importance of protecting our planet. By raising awareness at a young age, children develop a sense of responsibility towards the environment and what it means to be sustainable.
  • Educational Opportunities:  Earth Day provides a platform for hands-on, experiential learning. Through activities like nature walks, planting, and recycling projects, children engage in real-world experiences that deepen their understanding of environmental concepts.
  • Critical Thinking Skills: Earth Day activities encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Children learn to identify environmental challenges and brainstorm creative solutions, empowering them to become environmentally conscious citizens.
  • Empowerment and Action: Earth Day empowers children to take positive action for the environment. By participating in activities like litter clean-ups or tree planting, children develop a sense of efficacy and realize that even small actions can make a difference.
  • Longer term Impact: Early exposure to Earth Day can have long-term impacts on children's attitudes and behaviors towards the environment. By instilling environmental values from a young age, educators help shape future generations of environmentally responsible citizens.

Recognising Earth Day in early education lays the foundation for a lifelong commitment to environmental awareness, equipping children with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to address environmental challenges and create a more sustainable world.
