Outdoor Play and Exploration at Aspire Pakenham

Posted December 13th 2024

Outdoor play in early learning incorporates a wide range of activities that promote physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development in young children. It allows children to explore the natural world, engage in hands-on learning, develop essential life skills and also promotes good health.

At Aspire Early Education Pakenham, the children engage in various activities in the outdoor yard that promote outdoor play and also teach them about sustainability practices. They also enjoy regular excursions to the local park which allows them to adventure outside and explore nature and their local community.

Outdoor Learning Experiences

Recently Pakenham’s Kinder children expressed their love for the environment by creating a beautiful tree using loose parts like leaves and tree bark collected from the kinder yard. This hands-on activity allowed them to explore their surroundings, connect with nature, and showcase their creativity. Watching them work together and transform their findings into art was truly inspiring!

Over in the Toddler hub, the children explored a shape recognition experience as they learnt to match three different shapes to their drawn outlines. They participated in this activity in the outdoor yard where they used chalk to outline the shapes on the pavement. This engaging activity not only helped them identify and understand shapes, but also promoted hands-on learning in an outdoor setting.

Sustainability Fun

Aspire Pakenham also practice sustainability which highlights the importance of nature and the environment in children’s learning.

The Kinder children have been busy expressing their love for the environment by planting saplings with Pakenham’s Sustainability Officer, Harry. Every day, they carefully water and care for their growing plants, learning the importance of responsibility, patience, and the magic of nature. It’s truly heartwarming to see their dedication and pride in nurturing something so special.

The children also had a fantastic day recently with Tracey from BaleGrow during her sustainability incursion. The toddler children explored the magic of food production by reading a story about animals, picking carrots straight from the soil, and even meeting some wriggly new friends—worms! Meanwhile, the kinder rooms had a hands-on “Old MacDonald” experience where they learned to plant their own plants and care for the earth. This incursion program is a great way to make learning about sustainability interactive and fun for the children. It also promotes outdoor play and getting involved in nature.

Excursions to the Local Park

Throughout the term, Aspire Pakenham also run regular excursions to Ascot Park, the local park in Pakenham. Recently the kinder children had an exciting day exploring Ascot Park and the playground there. The thrill of adventure, climbing, running, and discovering new things made this excursion a truly unforgettable experience. It’s wonderful to see their smiles, teamwork, and enthusiasm as they embraced the great outdoors.

This excursion provides a fun day outside in the natural environment, whilst also enhancing their social and physical wellbeing. Check out some of the fun below!

Outdoor learning experiences and excursions provide many benefits for young children including physical activity, social interaction and positive mental health. Outdoor play also helps children explore the natural environment around them such as plants, trees, water, and mud. While staying SunSmart, being outside also provides a source of Vitamin D for children, which is important for their growth and development.
