Outdoor Classroom Day at Aspire Cobblebank

Celebrating learning in the fresh air
At Aspire Cobblebank, we organised an Outdoor Classroom Day and we made the most of our wonderful outdoor spaces, creating a full day of fun, learning and connection with nature. We love showing that learning can happen anywhere and especially outdoors as well. Plus, we were so lucky that the weather was simply perfect this day!
We kicked off the morning with group time. Each classroom held their circle time under the open sky, and the children shared their favourite things about being outside. From “digging in the sand” to “feeling the sun”, their answers set the perfect tone for a day spent outdoors.
One of the favourite spots was our Emotion Zone. This was a quiet area filled with mirrors, emotion props and natural materials. Here, children were encouraged to explore how they felt and learn the words to describe it. It was a calm, welcoming space where nature supported emotional growth.
We set up our own Traffic School and it came to life with a mini road system complete with signs and crossings and traffic lights. Educators guided conversations about road safety, turn-taking, and respecting road rules making it both fun and educational.
The Cozy Book Area was another highlight. Cushions were spread in our garden and children curled up with their favourite books. Some read quietly on their own, while others listened to educators reading aloud. The fresh air and warm sunshine made it a magical place for quiet reflection and imagination.
There were so much fun activities happening on this Outdoor Classroom Day and the children could move between a range of nature-based activities:
Nature Art
Using leaves, sticks and flowers to make beautiful collages
Gardening
Learning what plants need to grow and helping watering the garden
Scavenger Hunts
Finding feathers, rocks and other treasures while building teamwork and observation skills.
Farm Animal Play
A water play activity where the children engaged in sensory play as well as learning about how to care for the animals.
Of course we enjoyed lunch outside and at the end of the day, educators and children came together to reflect. The children talked about their favourite parts and most agreed it was the freedom to explore, play, and learn outside. As one child said:
Outdoor Classroom Day at Aspire Cobblebank was more than just a change of scenery. It was a celebration of nature-based learning and the magic of being outdoors. We’re excited to keep bringing that magic into our everyday routines
