Our Water Safety Incursion at Aspire Beveridge

Water Safety Program Aspire Beveridge

Last month, Aspire Beveridge hosted a special water safety incursion to help our children learn how to stay safe around water. Kerry from BlueFit Swimming visited our centre to talk about important water safety rules in a fun and engaging way.

Kerry showed the children how items, like a pool noodle, can be used to help someone in trouble in the water or for reaching out without putting themselves at risk. She also explained where to find help at a pool or beach, how to recognise lifeguards by the colour of their uniforms, and how to safely get an adult or call an ambulance if needed.

Throughout the session, Kerry asked the kinder children open-ended questions to encourage their thinking, like how they might call for help or what to do if a friend needs assistance. She reminded everyone how important it is to always swim with a buddy and to never swim alone.

Why is water safety education so important for young children?

Water safety is such an important part of early learning, especially here in Australia where so many families love spending time at pools, beaches, rivers and lakes. Almost all children love to splash and play in the water. Whether they’re at the beach, a local pool or just running through the sprinklers in the backyard. It’s so much fun, but for young children it can be dangerous if they don’t know how to stay safe.

Sadly, it only takes a few seconds for the unimaginable to happen. That’s why teaching children about water safety from a young age is so important. It helps them learn simple ways to keep themselves safe, gives them the confidence to ask for help, and encourages them to look out for their siblings and friends too.

Learning about water safety early also means children feel more confident as they start swimming lessons and spend more time in and around water. Knowing the risks, understanding how to get help, and remembering to always swim with an adult or buddy can make a real difference.

At Aspire, we believe that by giving children these important lessons early on, we help keep them safe and help families relax and enjoy the water together.
