Nurturing Green Thumbs in Aspire Deanside Village’s Gardening Program

There is nothing quite like spending time in nature gardening. At Aspire Deanside Village’s gardening program, children are encouraged to learn about where food comes from, how plants grow, and develop essential skills. But why should we encourage children to spend time gardening? Read on to find out.
Gardening is an enjoyable activity no matter a person’s age, whether you’re one or one hundred. Gardening is an enjoyable outdoor activity that children love. It encourages them to be outside in fresh air, fosters awareness of their surroundings, and enhances their self-confidence. Gardening in early education may also improve health outcomes in preschool-aged children. Picky eaters may also be more likely to eat food they have grown themselves than food bought at the shops.
Sharing the experience of gardening together is another fantastic way for young children to connect. It also fosters teamwork and camaraderie when watering and harvesting their garden crops.
Aspire Early Education Deanside Village’s gardening program is a popular inclusion at the centre. Since planting a variety of plants, herbs and vegetables when the centre opened in September 2024, the centre has harvested plenty of produce.
Recently, the three-year-old kinder children have had a blast in the garden! They harvested some lettuce, parsley and a few other herbs to add to a salad for lunch. Over the last few weeks, they have learnt about the growing process for fruits and vegetables. Finishing this with picking and eating their own produce has deepened their understanding of where food comes from.
