Ngaru Pou Māori Cultural Incursion

On the 24th of September, Aspire Baldivis had the wonderful team from Ngaru Pou visit for a Māori cultural incursion. The children and educators had a fascinating time learning about this vibrant culture.
Ngaru Pou is a youth-led Māori cultural group that shares its culture, tradition, music, and dance with the community. They participate in community events, host fundraisers, travel to schools, and you may even be lucky enough to see them perform at the Freemantle Market! Their vision is to provide a Māori experience for tamariki (children) in Western Australia. In fact, this year commemorated their 10th year of sharing their culture with their local communities.
Aspire Baldivis were very excited to welcome the Ngaru Pou group into the centre. They were thrilled to have them demonstrate and teach a bit of Māori culture to their tamariki. The group sang some traditional children’s songs, as well as taught some Poi dancing and Haka. As they performed for each room in the centre, you could hear their beautiful voices ringing out. It sounded nearly angelic! All of the children were engrossed in their performances and loved joining in. Listen to their gorgeous rendition of “A Whole New World” from Aladdin in the video below.
After their performance to the kindergarten tamariki, they invited them to get a temporary traditional Ta Moko (Māori tattoo). We loved seeing this beautiful art adorn the skin of the Ngaru Pou group, so it was extra special for our children to take part in this tradition.
In all, this was a fantastic opportunity for the Aspire Baldivis team and children to share and experience Māori culture first-hand. We can’t wait to explore many more cultures and celebrate the people who make up our vibrant community.
Aspire Early Education Baldivis currently have limited availabilities at their centre! If you would like to enquire now or book a tour, call 1800 978 429. Otherwise, you can click the link here to learn more about Aspire’s flagship Western Australian centre.
