NAIDOC Week at Aspire Riverwalk

NAIDOC Week at Aspire Riverwalk was full of fun learning opportunities. There were lots to do, and have been busy setting up some great resources and experiences for the families and children to enjoy. Have a look at what our different rooms got up to!

What is NAIDOC Week?

NAIDOC Week is commemorated from the 7th to the 14th of July. It is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories. As well as that, to participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

The 2024 theme is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud.’ honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations cultures. The symbolism of fire reflects a connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This years’ artwork shows ancestors' hands placing an ember into a burning fire. This ember, and the fire, represent the sharing of cultural knowledge from one generation to the next.

Commemorating NAIDOC Week at Riverwalk

Throughout the week, the kinder children began building on their knowledge about Indigenous cultures. We learnt about Australian bread called 'Damper'. Then, we experienced hands-on learning by cooking damper itself. Children shared thoughts about what they think they should eat damper with. To give the damper our personal touch, the children put their initials on the damper so we could see the letters after it was baked. Then, we enjoyed it with our afternoon tea.

The Rapids children have loved getting creative for NAIDOC week. The educators displayed some Indigenous symbols and the children used red, black, and yellow playdough to recreate them. The children loved sharing their space and we enjoyed some rich conversations about the symbols and how they are used in the Aboriginal art and culture.

NAIDOC Week honours the history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. At Aspire Early Education, we create intentional learning experiences to teach our young children about First Nations cultures, promoting respect and understanding. It's a valuable opportunity to reflect on all sides of our history.

Aspire Early Education Riverwalk, Werribee has a continual dedication to listening to First Nation's voices, and teaching their children about their culture, customs and history. If you are interested in enroling or taking a tour at Aspire Riverwalk, call 1800 978 429 or click here.
