Harmony Week Celebrations at Aspire Berwick Waters

Harmony Week is a celebration that occurs each year from March 21st to March 27th, and celebrates cultural diversity, promotes inclusiveness, and aims to foster a sense of belonging for all Australians. In early education Harmony Week presents a valuable opportunity to teach young children about cultural diversity, inclusivity, and respect for others.

Aspire Early Education Berwick Waters celebrated Harmony Week through different cultural experiences and fun learning activities.  Discover more about how the centre celebrated and uplifted the diversity of the centre’s children and educators.

Dance and Celebration during Harmony Week

During Harmony Week, Aspire Berwick Waters had a visit from Bollywood Dance Masti led by the talented Kaurnas Kreative Kollection. It was an electrifying event, where the children danced their hearts out, spreading smiles and laughter all around. From graceful moves to energetic beats, every step resonated with the spirit of unity and togetherness. It was a mesmerizing showcase of cultural vibrancy and inclusivity as children from diverse backgrounds came together to celebrate in harmony.

Later in the week, Berwick Water’s kinder children had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant and rich culture of Africa! We had the pleasure of a had a special drum incursion by AFROBEAT Interactive Drumming Event, led by the talented Amadou. This was an exciting journey of exploration, diving deep into the heart of African traditions, music, and art. It gave the children a chance to explore the rhythms of African drums and embrace the beauty and diversity of another culture.

Not only did these cultural experiences provide a greater cultural understanding, but it also provided valuable opportunities to develop their physical, cognitive and social skills.

Cultural Activities in the Rooms

The children at Aspire Berwick Waters had a blast expressing themselves through art during Harmony Week. One of the activities involved painting the Indigenous flag, where they used the vibrant colours of the Aboriginal flag as inspiration.

They also thoroughly enjoyed the Aboriginal matching activity, where they had to match the correct images together. This activity sharpened their hand-eye coordination skills while also having fun and engaging with different cultures through play.

Learning about Australian culture allows children to understand the historical context and heritage of our country. It can help children develop a sense of identity and belonging, which contributes to their overall well-being and self-esteem.

Overall, cultural exploration plays a pivotal role in shaping young minds and nurturing a deep appreciation for diversity. It enables them to see the world from multiple viewpoints, fostering open-mindedness and critical thinking skills. Aspire Berwick Waters Harmony Week celebrations were a testament to the power of education in fostering unity and respect among our children.
