Growing a Green Thumb – Donnybrook’s Pot Plant Incursion

The children at Aspire Donnybrook flexed their green thumbs at their recent pot plant incursion! In perfect time for Mother’s Day, the children made a special gift to give to the special women in their lives. What a thoughtful gift, and a great way to learn about how plants work!

Pot Plant Incursion with Bale Grow

Tracey from BaleGrow visited Aspire Donnybrook for a day full of planting fun! BaleGrow is a sustainability program, tailored for early learning centres. BaleGrow is dedicated to producing programs that are fast-moving, fun, educational and most importantly can fit into the framework requirements and quality areas for all centres. Tracey has been running BaleGrow programs for over eight years and has a deep passion for sustainability and sharing her love of the planet with young children.

All the centre children were lucky enough to participate in the incursion, no matter how small. The littlest learners decorated pots to put their plants into. The kinder-aged children potted their very own plant into a mug. The children put these together as a gift for their mum or special person. First, the children selected a gorgeous mug for their plant to be put into. Then, the children looked at a variety of succulent saplings to put into their chosen mug. Once the plant and mug were chosen (a big choice to make!) the children then listened to Tracey as she explained how to pot their plant.

Pot your own Plant at Home!

Want to repot a plant sapling with your kids at home? Follow these easy steps!

1. Firstly, give the sides of the plastic sapling pot a gentle squeeze to make it easier to remove the plant.
2. Then, hold onto the base of the plant, closest to the soil, and gently pull out of the pot.
3. Place the plant and soil into your chosen vessel (can be a mug, pot, glass container, anything that can hold a plant!) – Tip: if your plant’s roots are longer than your new pot, gently pull off some of the soil and loose roots off the bottom of the plant so it can fit.
4. Scoop soil into your new pot around the outside of the roots and existing soil. Fill it up until there is about 1cm between the top of the soil and the top of your pot.
5. Pat down the soil firmly so it is all packed around the roots. This helps keep the plant stable.
6. Now you have a fancy new pot plant!
