Gardening Fun at Aspire White Hills

Gardening is a healthy and fun activity for children that provides a hands on-learning experience. There are many benefits of gardening for children that includes spending time outdoors, developing new skills and learning about science and nature from growing their own food.

Aspire White Hill's Garden

At Aspire White Hills, the children love being outdoors and participating in gardening activities. In White Hill’s outdoor yard, they have new garden beds that have been fitted out with seasonal herbs and vegetables. With supervision of our educators, the children observe them growing and can pick them when they are ready to eat.

Having this responsibility of caring for these garden beds, teaches children good habits and how they can grow herbs and vegetables themselves. This is a rewarding process for the children, and one that they can even implement at home.

Why Practice Gardening in Early Education?

Gardening provides hands-on learning experiences that can enhance various aspects of a child's education. Gardening offers a range of benefits for young children including:

  • Hands-on Learning: Children learn through direct interaction with plants, soil, and tools, enhancing their understanding of nature and science. It teaches them about biology, botany, ecology, and the environment in a practical, age-appropriate, and engaging way.
  • Sensory Development: Engaging with different textures, smells, and sights, such as digging in the soil and smelling the fresh herbs, supports sensory exploration.
  • Physical Activity: Gardening encourages movement and physical exercise, promoting motor skills. This increases their physical activity and also promotes time outdoors.
  • Environmental Awareness: Children gain an appreciation for nature and learn about sustainability and the environment. Having responsibility over watering the plants and maintaining the vegetables, teaches children how to care for plants.
  • Nutritional Education: Growing fruits and vegetables can lead to better eating habits and an understanding of healthy foods.
  • Social Skills: Working together in a garden fosters teamwork and communication among children and between educators.
  • Emotional Well-being: Time spent in nature can reduce stress and improve mood, enhancing overall emotional health.

Overall, gardening enriches early education by providing diverse and meaningful learning experiences and encourages curiosity and critical thinking skills. We can’t wait to implement more garden activities within the Aspire White Hills curriculum.
