Cultural Diversity Week, held from 18th - 24th March, is a time to celebrate the power, influence, and stories of multicultural communities. This year’s theme is “Our Shared Stories- Celebrating Together”, which encourages us to recognise and celebrate the beautiful connections that enrich our culturally diverse state. This Week aims to foster inclusivity and unity among people from various cultural backgrounds, emphasising the importance of contributions of different communities to society.
At Aspire, many of our families have different cultural backgrounds which we believe are important to recognise and celebrate throughout the year. For example, our food menus incorporate recipes that are enjoyed by different communities, so that the children experience food from a range of cultures, and not just what they might typically eat at home.
We also recognise different cultures through internal and community celebrations at our centres including Holi, Diwali, Ramadan, Chinese New Year, Sinhalese New Year, St Patrick’s Day and more. These are important days in the Aspire calendar that celebrate different events and traditions that are important to our Aspire families.
At Aspire Cobblebank, they celebrate Cultural Diversity Week each year, to emphasise the importance of different cultures within their community. Read more below about their celebrations at the centre.
Aspire Cobblebank acknowledges the diverse cultures incorporated into our Aspire community, and continually recognise these throughout their curriculum. During Cultural Diversity Week, Aspire Cobblebank celebrated by inviting children and staff to wear clothes that represented their cultural heritage. This gave the children and educators the opportunity to showcase their identity and to foster an understanding and appreciation for diversity among their peers. Check out some of the photos below!
During Cultural Diversity week, the educators also set up a variety of learning experiences in each room. This included sorting different identity blocks, using colored playdoh to create national flags, reading cultural children’s books and cooking sweet treats and snacks that originate from different countries. These experiences and activities aimed to enhance the children’s awareness and understanding of each other’s traditions and identities.
