Connecting to Country at Aspire Baldivis

Connecting to country and creating community ties is something at the heart of Aspire’s Baldivis centre. To pay respects to the land we play and learn on, we held a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony. This was held as a part of the centre's NAIDOC Week activities and learnings. Learn more about this meaningful event in the blog below.
The morning of July the 12th, during NAIDOC Week, marked a significant event at Aspire Baldivis. Cyril Yarran from Milliyaan Aboriginal Services visited our centre to conduct a traditional Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony. For us, it was more than just a ceremonial occasion; it was an opportunity to connect with and honour the rich Aboriginal heritage deeply embedded in the land we stand on. This a was very special moment for us, and we were excited to learn, and partake in this traditional custom.
Cyril's roots in Baldivis run deep. His grandparents were the first Aboriginal family to settle in the burgeoning Medina development back in the 1960s. The stories he shared and traditions he upheld, are not just historical narratives but living legacies that continue to shape and enrich our understanding of this region.
What made this morning even more special was Cyril's commitment to sharing his knowledge regularly with us. From August, Cyril will be visiting the centre each month to share his knowledge and culture with the children. This means that we have the opportunity not only to learn more about Aboriginal customs and traditions, but also to forge a deeper connection with Cyril himself. His dedication to preserving and passing down his cultural heritage is both inspiring and invaluable.
As we look ahead, we anticipate the continued growth of our relationship with Cyril and Milliyaan Aboriginal Services. These interactions are not just about education; they are about fostering understanding, respect, and a shared appreciation for the land and its history.
At Aspire Baldivis, this experience will undoubtedly resonate for a long time to come. It serves as a reminder of the importance of embracing diversity, celebrating cultural richness, and striving for meaningful connections within our community. We are grateful for this morning's profound teachings and eagerly await the journeys of discovery that lie ahead with Cyril by our side.
