Celebrating National Reconciliation Week at Aspire Atherstone

This National Reconciliation Week, we at Aspire Atherstone proudly stand in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We reaffirm our commitment to building a more open, fair, and inclusive Australia.

What is National Reconciliation Week?

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

This year’s theme, “Bridging Now to Next,” reminds us of the enduring connection between past, present, and future. It also inspires us to foster equality and respect among our children as they learn how we can contribute to reconciliation. Bridging Now to Next calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.

How We Commemorated NRW

Throughout the week, we’ve embraced rich Aboriginal culture by weaving Aboriginal perspectives into our daily teaching and learning. In the Wetlands room, children created an Aboriginal flag collage using craft paper, gaining an understanding of the flag’s significance and the meanings behind each colour. The colours on the flag represent: black for the people, red for the land, and finally, yellow for the sun.

Celebrating Culture and Connection

In our Wattle room, we began the morning with a special story time, reading “Come Together”. This is a beautiful book written by Isaiah Firebrace and illustrated by the talented Mununjali and Fijian artist Jaelyn. The vibrant images and personal stories in the book captivated the children. Because of this, it prompted them to explore topics like the importance of Elders, the Dreaming, and cultural identity."

The story sparked thoughtful conversations about the shades of the Aboriginal flag, deepening the children’s understanding of the symbolism. To extend this learning, we combined history and creativity in a meaningful project by creating our own Aboriginal flag using recycled materials. The children worked together, colouring disposable cup lids and arranging them on cardboard to form the flag. It was a joyful, collaborative activity that beautifully connected storytelling, culture, and creativity.

At Aspire Atherstone, we are committed to embedding Aboriginal perspectives and fostering a sense of belonging and respect. This National Reconciliation Week, we’re proud to celebrate culture and connection with our children, helping them build the foundations for a more united future.
