Book Week Fun at Aspire: Bringing Stories to Life

National Children’s Book Week is a fun week in the Aspire Calendar every year! This year marks the 80th anniversary of Children’s Book Week, and it continues to be a special event that shines a spotlight on the joy and power of reading. This year’s theme “Book an adventure!”, encourages children to set off on adventures through time, lands, and imagination.
Our Aspire centres recognised Book week in a variety of ways. From book-themed foods to costume parades, to special story times, there was lots to do and see! Read on to explore how our centres celebrated.
At Aspire Deanside, the children enjoyed a range of exciting experiences across the centre. The children took part in a special character visit, enjoyed a lively puppet show in the piazza with themed props, books, banners, and explored role-play activities on a book-themed stage with immersive areas for each story.
To create the book-themed stage, Deanside's Children’s Committee rolled up their sleeves and helped prepare the Book Week stage from start to finish. From designing banners, arranging costumes and puppets, to organising all the containers and resources, these little leaders made it all happen. Check out the wonderful stage below —a true celebration of creativity, teamwork, and fun!
At Aspire Smiths Lane, their reception and piazza were transformed into a magical Under the Sea wonderland. Over the past two weeks, the children have been busy creating sea-themed artwork—colourful sea creatures, vibrant corals, and enchanting mermaids, which were then displayed throughout the centre. The team also planned a variety of activities inspired by the ocean theme to further immerse our children in the celebration.
Aspire Bendigo also had some exciting events throughout the week. They had Andrea, the Bendigo Mayor visit the centre who did a special book reading for the kinder children. They also had a dramatic storytelling incursion ofThe Very Hungry Caterpillar, which was a wonderful experience that the children enjoyed.
Each day also featured a special menu item linked to a story. Monday started off with Spaghetti and meatballs for the book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. And ended in Wombat stew with mashed potato to represent the book Wombat Stew. This was such a fun and delicious way to recognise Book Week!
As part of the Book Week celebrations at Aspire Cobblebank, children enjoyed a costume day inspired by the theme of their favourite stories, along with engaging storytelling sessions from our team. They also had the chance to get creative through puppet making activities and enjoy a fun-filled puppet show event. Together with our families, Cobblebank also hosted a cultural storytelling day, where families were invited to share books written in their native language. To finish the week, everyone come together for a vibrant Book Week parade and a special photo booth day for families to capture the memories.
In celebration of Book Week, Aspire Berwick Waters organised a children’s excursion to Bunjil Place- Casey Cardinia Library. Filled with books and stories, libraries provide children with an enriching opportunity to explore both informative and captivating content. Visiting the library was a fun experience for the children where they can pick out books, listen to stories, and see reading celebrated as something fun and exciting.
Definitely one of the highlights of the week are the fun costumes that children and staff dress up in from their favourite books! It was great to see all the clever costume ideas and these books truly come to life. Have a look at some of our favourites from across our centres below.
Aspire is also proud to have a partnership with Storybox Hub, a fantastic online library where storytellers read children’s books aloud while the illustrations appear on screen. Every Aspire family has access to Storybox hub for free. This resource encourages family to keep the reading going at home too.
As part of Book Week, our Aspire centres used Storybox hub stories and tools to enhance the children’s learning journeys. Each centre picked 2-3 stories which they based their experiences and activities on throughout the week. It was wonderful to see the children get so excited about stories and reading!
