BaleGrow Sustainability Incursion at Aspire Pakenham

The kinder children at Aspire Early Education and Kindergarten Pakenham are very interested in learning about sustainability, how plants grow, and healthy food choices. It is also a big part of the curriculum at Aspire, and inspires the children to be more aware of sustainability and how they can take care of their environment.

To expand their learning on this topic, Aspire Pakenham recently had a BaleGrow incursion at the centre. Learn more about this program and the benefits of learning about sustainability from a young age.

BaleGrow Sustainability Incursion

Recently the kindergarten children at Aspire Pakenham had an amazing time during the BaleGrow incursion at the centre. The BaleGrow Incursion program is tailored to different age groups, ensuring age-appropriate content and activities. It provides a hands-on learning experience that allows children to engage directly with different concepts.

During the recent session, the children learnt all about different vegetables, nature, and how plants grow. They were able to pick real vegetables straight from the garden and collect them in their own little baskets! Our little gardeners were so proud of their harvest and loved engaging in this experience. They also discovered fun facts about gardening and healthy food choices., and was a fun, hands-on way to connect with nature and learn about where our food comes from.

These incursions align with the Early Years Learning Framework, supporting educators in meeting sustainability outcomes and quality standards. BaleGrow also provides resources and guidance to educators, helping them maintain sustainable practices beyond the incursion itself.

Why Teaching Sustainability in Early Education Matters

Introducing sustainability in early childhood education is about more than just teaching children to recycle. It's about nurturing children to feel a sense of care, responsibility, and connection to the world around them.

The early years are a critical time when lifelong values and habits are formed, making it the perfect stage to introduce environmentally conscious behaviours. When children engage in sustainable practices like gardening, composting, reusing materials, or conserving water, they begin to understand how their actions impact the planet. These hands-on experiences not only support learning in science, math, and social development, but also foster respect for nature and a sense of belonging to a larger community.

By empowering young children to care for the environment from an early age, we’re helping to raise a generation of mindful, compassionate citizens who are equipped to make a positive difference.
