Last Friday Aspire Early Education Atherstone celebrated Diwali Festival of Lights at their centre, in partnership with Lendlease. It was a wonderful night that drew in a number of families and friends in the Atherstone community, and the feeling of celebration was felt throughout the evening.
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most significant and widely celebrated festivals in India and by Indian communities around the world. It is a multi-day Hindu festival that typically lasts for five days, and usually falls in October or November, depending on the Hindu lunar calendar. Diwali is often referred to as the "Festival of Lights" because it represents the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.
Our Diwali celebrations included wonderful performances by professional Bollywood dancers and a Dohl Drummer. It was wonderful to see everyone dancing and having fun to traditional Indian music. Thank you to Royal Punjabi Spice, a local Melton food business who provided delicious Indian food to families as well.
We also had face painting and mehndi body art on offer, with gorgeous designs on display everywhere you looked. Mehndi is a form of temporary skin decoration using a paste created with henna, popular in the Indian sub-continent. It is traditionally applied at weddings, births, and other large celebrations, like Diwali.
Our friends at Little Sports Heroes also provided fun and active activities for the children. It was a great way for the children to get their bodies moving!
Thank you to the everyone in the community who attended and to the Aspire Atherstone team for making this event as magical as possible! Check out our video below and the amazing photos taken on the night.
