Aspire Kalkallo’s Recycling Program

Learning about recycling and sustainability is an important part of the curriculum at Aspire. Aspire Early Education and Kindergarten Kalkallo have recently set up a recycling station at their centre in their Piazza space. They have invited families and children to kindly donate a few items from home that usually go in the recycling bins. The children and educators then make and create different art and craft items using these recyclable materials.

Some of the items that families can donate include:
The aim of Kalkallo’s recycling station is to teach children about recycling practices and that we can reduce waste by using recyclable materials in our creative art projects. The children have started creating some different artwork, but we cannot wait to see what amazing creations can be made in the coming months.
Importance of Teaching Good Recycling Habits in Early Education
Introducing good recycling habits and processes in early education is important for several reasons, as it helps shape environmentally responsible behaviors from a young age. Teaching children about recycling helps them understand the importance of protecting resources and encourages them to adopt environmentally friendly practices. Aspire Kalkallo’s recycling station helps teach the children to re-use resources in a creative way. It also teaches them about what things can and can’t be recycled, which helps them learn about the impact of waste on the planet and the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
Lessons on recycling also help to enhance the children’s cognitive skills by encouraging them to think critically about how their actions affect the environment. Sorting materials, understanding recycling processes, and recognizing what items are recyclable help develop problem-solving and categorisation skills. Aspire Kalkallo’s recycling station also promotes and inspires creativity, as the children create different art from the recycled materials that are donated in the station.
Lastly, it can also have a positive impact on recycling behaviours in families, as children can often influence household change. When children learn about recycling and its benefits, they can encourage their families to adopt better recycling habits, thereby extending the impact beyond the classroom.
Incorporating recycling education in early childhood teaches children the importance of being environmentally conscious and adopting the proper recycling practices, which has a positive impact on our future environment.
