Aspire Bella Estate’s Outdoor Classroom Play

Outdoor classrooms allow children to explore and discover the world around them and can be powerful learning environments when set up effectively. At Aspire Early Education Bella Estate, they recognise the importance of promoting outdoor play and incorporating outdoor classrooms into their programs.
Recently the 4-year-old kinder room had an outdoor classroom day where the natural world became their playground of learning. Our educators arranged a variety of experiences that enriched the children's creativity and imagination as they play and explore.
Firstly, there was a whimsical mud kitchen which invited the little chefs to create imaginary culinary delights using outside resources such as mud, leaves, and twigs. Nearby, a construction corner buzzed with creativity as children built their imaginary forts. Next the children picked apples at the apple picking station, as well as creating drawings on a blank canvas set up on an easel. This outdoor setting not only fosters a love for nature but also sparks curiosity, collaboration, and imaginative play, making learning an adventure in every corner.

Setting up classroom activities outside is important for many reasons. From improved social skills, to increasing physical health, children reap many benefits from spending time outdoors.
Increases Physical Health
Outdoor activities naturally encourage more movement, helping children stay active and healthy. Playing outdoors improves children’s gross motor skills, such as running, jumping and climbing. It also refines their fine motor skills such as picking up small objects. Time spent outdoors also ensures children get fresh air and sunlight, which are essential for physical health and vitamin D synthesis.
Promotes Creativity and Problem-Solving
The open-ended nature of outdoor environments fosters creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Outdoor play also allows children to solve problems and figure things out for themselves. For example, they may need to work out how to use a piece of playground equipment or use outdoor leaves and sticks to create artwork. The critical thinking and problem-solving skills children develop through outdoor play will help them to succeed in school and later in life.
Enhances Social and Emotional Development
Outdoor activities often require teamwork and collaboration, helping students develop social skills and learn to work together. It can also help them improve skills such as communication, turn-taking, and sharing. Interacting in less structured environments outside of the classroom can help students practice and improve their conflict resolution skills.
Being in the outside environment can also have a calming effect, which helps reduce stress and anxiety levels. This can improve a child’s mood and boost their confidence as they learn in new environments.
Deepens their Understanding of the Natural World
Regular exposure to outdoor settings helps students develop a connection to and appreciation for nature and their outdoor environment. Outdoor activities can provide practical, hands-on experiences that deepen students' understanding of environmental and ecological concepts, such as discovering new plants, learning about the changing seasons, or different habitats.
Provides Engaging Learning Experiences
Learning in an outdoor environment can be more engaging and motivating, helping students to stay interested in their studies, as well as learn new skills. Outdoor settings provide opportunities to integrate different subjects like science, math, art, and literature, creating a more holistic learning experience. This provides many academic benefits for them later in life.
Engaging in outdoor classroom play provides a well-rounded educational experience that enhances students' physical health, cognitive abilities, social skills, emotional well-being and more.
