Nutrition Week at Aspire Kalkallo

National Nutrition Week, held from October 15th to October 21st, is an annual event that aims to raise awareness about the importance of good nutrition and healthy eating habits. This year’s theme was "Eat Well, Live Well”, which emphasises the importance of healthy eating habits and their role in overall well-being.
Nutrition in early education is crucial for promoting healthy growth and development in children, as well as teaching young children about healthy eating habits. Aspire Early Education Kalkallo recognised National Nutrition week at their centre by setting up different activities and experiences for the children to learn about healthy eating in a fun and interactive way.
Last week, children at Aspire Kalkallo had heaps of fun learning about nutrition and healthy eating during Nutrition Week. The younger learners explored healthy eating by touching, feeling, and playing with various fruits. This was an engaging sensory experience, that allows the children to learn about the world around them through their senses.
The kinder children also engaged in a fun activity creating their own healthy eating lunch box. Using different cut out pieces of food including fruits, sandwiches, yoghurt, popcorn and other snacks, they stuck them onto a template of their lunchbox to create their ideal lunch. This helped them learn more the importance of their food choices and the nutritional needs of each different food group. See some photos below of these learning experiences in action!
Learning about healthy foods and what is good for our bodies allows children from a young age to learn about the importance of taking care of themselves. Developing healthy eating habits during childhood is crucial for cultivating positive dietary practices that contribute to preventing adverse health effects in both the early years and later stages of life.
That’s why at Aspire, we incorporate nutrition education into our curriculum to help children understand the importance of food choices and how different foods affect their bodies.
Many children spend an average of 16 hours in care every week, which means Aspire provides a majority of daily meals and snacks to children in our care that attend for eight hours a day. All our meals at Aspire are prepared according to the nutritional needs of children as per the Australian Dietary Guidelines and the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. We encourage the children to experience a variety of different foods that encourage healthy eating and connection with their peers and culture. So, while they learn about healthy eating and nutrition in their curriculum, they are also enjoying nutritional and delicious food at their mealtimes too.
Nutrition at Aspire Kalkallo is key part of instilling healthy habits in the children in our care. From making food fun, to eating together, Aspire celebrates nurturing a healthy relationship with food.
