Aspire Cobblebank’s Science Workshops for the Kinders!

Posted July 3rd 2024

Aspire Cobblebank have recently introduced “Mad about Science” incursion workshops for their 4-year-old Kindergarten children. What do these workshops involve? Learn more below!

Mad about Science Workshops

These workshops will be held on a monthly basis and run by Mad about Science. These quality science workshops are aligned with the Aspire curriculum, and blends enticing class demonstrations with small group experiments to facilitate genuine learning.

During these sessions, the children will develop critical and creative thinking skills. They will ask questions, make predictions and draw conclusions using scientific methods.

The first introductory workshop for our 4-year Kinder room was held last Friday 29th June. In this first session they were introduced to the basic scientific concepts. Each table was set up with a different science theme, including magnetism, electricity, chemistry, light and colour, and mini beasts. Throughout the coming months, the workshops will cover a range of different concepts including living things, kitchen chemistry and robots. The team and kinder children are looking forward to these ongoing workshops. See some photos of last week’s workshop below!

STEM Education at Aspire Cobblebank

Aspire’s Step into Kinder Program offers an engaging, play-based curriculum combined with intentional teaching and interest-based projects that encourages and supports our flourishing four-year-olds before they start school.

A big part of the Term 3 curriculum at Aspire Cobblebank is focusing on STEM education and experiences. STEM experiences allow children to experiment and practice different skills, so they can draw on them in real life. Some of the science concepts the Cobblebank Kinder children learn include:

  • Physical Sciences – explorations about the way objects move and how movement is influenced by a variety of factors, including size, volume, and shape.
  • Biological Sciences – investigating the needs of living things, including food, water, and shelter for people and animals.
  • Research and Analysis - building on research and investigation skills.

Running these monthly science workshops aims to add value and practical lessons to the science concepts they already begin to learn during the curriculum.

Benefits of Learning Science in Early Education

Learning science concepts and skills in early education can have many benefits for young children as they transition into primary.

Firstly, science education encourages children to ask questions, explore, and investigate the world around them. This natural curiosity is a key driver of lifelong learning and intellectual growth. Engaging in scientific activities also helps children develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They learn to make observations, form hypotheses, conduct experiments, and analyse results, which are crucial skills to have into adulthood.

Experimenting with science activities also encourages creative thinking by prompting children to come up with new ideas and solutions. This can lead to innovative thinking and a willingness to experiment and take risks.

It also promotes an understanding of the natural world and principles that govern it. This understanding is essential for making informed decisions about health, safety, and the environment.

Lastly, science projects often involve teamwork, which encourages children to collaborate with their peers. It teaches children to work together and communicate their ideas effectively. Science education also helps build confidence as children learn new concepts, conduct experiments and successfully solve problems.

By integrating science education and experiences into early education, we equip children with essential skills and knowledge that will benefit them throughout their lives and contribute to their overall development.
