World Environment Day 2025 at Aspire Cranbourne North

Each year on 5 June, World Environment Day brings people across the globe together to reflect, learn and take action for our planet. This year’s theme is “Ending Plastic Pollution”, a cause we feel strongly about here at Aspire Cranbourne North.

Since we've opened our doors earlier this year, sustainability has been close to our hearts. From the beginning we've been focused on making positive changes within the centre and help the children build a connection with the environment.

Little Steps to a Better World at the Centre

At the centre, we’re very mindful of how we use paper and plastic in our daily routines. We recycle paper wherever possible, limit our use of laminating and reuse cardboard and paper for craft and learning activities. Did you know, we also turn off the corridor lights between 1pm and 3pm each day? Not only because it’s quiet time for the children, but also as a simple way to save energy. Small actions like these help us lead by example and show the children how easy it is to care for the environment.

A step towards plastic-free storage
We’re really excited to share one of our latest steps towards becoming more sustainable. A big thank you to our local Chemist Warehouse Cranbourne North, who generously donated a large number of recycling boxes to the centre!

These boxes are now helping us move away from plastic containers. We’ve already started in our Kinder Hub, where we’re using strong cardboard boxes instead of plastic, and we’re planning to roll this out across the whole centre. It’s a simple change, but one that brings us closer to a plastic-free future.

A creative World Environment Day activity
To mark this day, the children in our toddler room joined in a special activity. They recreated a picture of the environment using only natural materials. It was a beautiful, hands-on experience that helped them express their understanding of nature and sparked some wonderful conversations.

Watching the children connect with the environment in such an open and thoughtful way is exactly why we continue to focus on sustainability. After all, it's not just in what we do as adults, but in how we teach the next generation.

Why Environmental Awareness Matters in Early Education

At Aspire Cranbourne North, we believe that building environmental awareness from a young age is super important. When children are given the chance to explore nature and learn how to care for it, they develop empathy, responsibility and a stronger sense of belonging in the world around them.

These early experiences lay the foundation for lifelong values and we love finding creative and age-appropriate ways to introduce big topics like sustainability and climate care into their daily routines.

Little Tips to Help Your Child Take Small Steps Towards a Better Environment

Helping your child develop eco-friendly habits early on doesn’t have to be complicated, it’s often the little things that make the biggest difference! Here are a few simple ideas you can try at home:

Involve your child(ren) in recycling
Let them help you sort paper, plastics, and soft plastics. Make it a game by talking about which bin things go into and why.

Talk about saving water
Encourage turning off the tap while brushing teeth. Even young children can understand that water is precious.

Use reusable bags together
Bring your own bags when you shop and let your child carry a small one. It helps build awareness around reducing plastic use. If you do end up using a bag from the shops, please reuse them at home, every bit helps!

Pack a waste-free lunchbox
Opt for reusable containers and drink bottles. Let them help pack their lunch to learn how to make sustainable choices. Use only "nude food", this means foods without disposable packaging without plastic wraps, paper or foil.

Walk or ride when you can
If it’s safe, choose to walk, ride or scoot to the park or school. It’s good for the planet and your child’s wellbeing.

Get out in nature
Spending time outside helps children appreciate the environment. Explore your local park, beach or backyard and talk about what you see, smell and hear.

Above all, every small step matters and we’re proud to be showing the children how our everyday choices can make a real difference.
