Sometimes, spaces within an early education and care service get the chance to be reimagined and refreshed. At Aspire Early Education and Kindergarten Wollert, we’re always looking for ways to support our children's diverse needs. We strive to create environments where every child feels comfortable, engaged, and calm. One of the unique spaces at our centre is the Piazza – a beautiful open area that has become a favourite among many of our children.
The Piazza was originally designed as a flexible environment for children who needed a change of scenery. It was a space to run larger incursions, shared mealtimes and larger group activities. As time went on, we saw the need for a calm area where children who were feeling dysregulated could go to relax.
After recognising the success of the space and the positive impact it had, we recently decided to transition the Piazza into a dedicated sensory, calm area. We've thoughtfully added activities and equipment tailored to help children regulate their emotions and sensory experiences. Since this change, we’ve noticed that children using the Piazza are more focused, relaxed, and deeply engaged with the activities available.
Some of our children request to spend time there when they feel the need for a quieter, calmer space. We’ve found that the reimagined Piazza has been especially beneficial for children with unmet sensory needs. They walk into a peaceful area where they can reset and re-engage in a way that feels right for them.
The space has become so loved that some families find it hard to leave. They often spend up to 30 minutes after pick-up as their children continue to enjoy the Piazza! It’s a true testament to how important thoughtfully designed environments are in supporting children's wellbeing and learning journey.
